Very friendly staff and great food. Tad bit pricey but very worth it in my opinion. Highly reccomended for tourists, although pricey but food like these are hard to find outside of Japan.
MoreFood isn’t good quality and pricey. Had the Yamato beef sukiyaki meal and an unagi set. We expected better food here, especially for a restaurant that specializes in unagi. Have tried other places in the kansai region with better unagi. Restaurant vibe was noisy too (a lot of tourists). Service is good nevertheless.
MoreLovely atmosphere...traditional resturant with great eel
Quite expensive here but the set is good. Will make you full. Stumbled upon this place when other place was closed. Order 2 set for 4000+ yen. Don't order the tempura set. Not that good imo.
MoreLovely staff, nice traditional ambiance, great eel!
4/5 on unagi, 5/5 on shabushabu. Nice environment with frienely staffs. Menu with multiple languages included.
MoreAwesome Unagi can be found here. Love it!
Food quality is below average, I would expect a higher quality at this price. It isn’t worth to wait if there is a long line. Efficient service. I am v surprised with all those 5* reviews.
MoreLittle bit overrated 😎. But we enjoyed. Family friendly. It's clean and nice space to slow down. Go little bit early to avoid the wait time.
MoreGreat unagi rice bowls. Service is really friendly, like many old style Japanese restaurants. English menu is available so ordering won't be a problem.
MoreQueues are normally very long, we were lucky to come when there was no wait, and the unagi sets were delicious. At the front of the store, you can see chefs skinning and cutting the eels which is memerising in itself to watch. The interior is nice and cozy, quite telling of the long history of this restaurant. Do add the special seasoning/powder to enhance the taste of the eels!
MoreI come there before the rush hour so it is not very crowded. However, around twelve, there is a long queue waiting outside. The food is good but not excellent. The price is reasonable and the decoration is stylish. The restaurant is worth to visit.
MoreQuaint & traditional .. good unagi and sukiyaki .. authentic in its preparation .. there's also a small gift shop in the front, for some interesting soucenirs ..
MoreVery good Unagi. Quiet corner of the road makes this place not easy to find but the food is worth the effort. Quite pricey but how often do you travel and have fun? 3 pax had a price of 17,000 yen.
MoreThis was a great restaurant great price and the portions are just right. I recommend the beef sukiyaki set with the eel rice. If you don’t speak Japanese like me, they will still understand English
MoreVery cute place and great food! No reservations needed when we arrived for lunch at 11:30. There was a wait when we left though. Definitely get the ohitsu mabushi.
MoreIf I could give this reataurant, EDOGAWA, 10 stars I would. To start this location is perfect for exploring central Nara, including Todaiji Temple, Nara National Museum, and Nara Park with lovely Deers. It is an easy walk to Kofukuji Temple, Nara Visitor Center & INN, and Higashimuki Arcade Market, KINTETSU Railway, etc. Then there was the amazing Japanese traditional foods in this place, mainly cuisines of ELL. It was a fascinating insight into Japanese food. What's more, we did not know there have been two types of grilled elles in Japan, one is type-EDO was born and raised in the Eastern part of Japan, TOKYO, the other was in OSAKA, well known as a special town of KUIDAORE (there must be a huge number of customers are picky about flavor and taste). Finally, they would prepare the customers in a small group "the Special Welcoming Room" excluding the busy Lunch time.Highly recomended!!
MoreReached around 2pm and surprisingly no queue.Waiters are nice and warm, teaching us proper way to enjoy sukiyaki, grilled Eel and tempura.Service are fast.Very very comfortable dining and resting place.Fooda are fantastic! Main dish is their Eel but I love eeee their tempura. Will definitely come back and visit again.
MoreEdogawa is a great eatery. They have you take off and store your shoes at the front. You can park a stroller in this area as well. You are then taken to a closed off room depending on your party size where you may share a room with a few small tables or a couple large ones. The whole restaurant feels authentic and enjoyable. The food is terrific. If it is your first visit then try to get some of the combination options to sample a lot of items. The eel is well prepared. Parking is non-existent, but it is close to the train and easy to get to by bike. Pricing is on par with the value of the food.
MoreOne of the best meals I have in Japan
Delicious Unagi. Tatami and table seats available. We choose table to avoid 20 minutes waiting. Unfortunately, the great atmosphere was spoiled by the china tourists at the next table, who talk and drink loudly and their children even play yo-yo in the restaurant and open-close the door frequently. The staff notices and kindly ask them to lower the voice down. Finally the cozy ambience returns, and save our day!
MoreThe unagi (eel) is in another level here, definitely delicious, but is a bit pricey . The set in the picture is is 3000 yen. Of course there are more expensive choice come with more pieces of unagi. If you love unagi, this is the place you don't want to miss out.
MoreEel's good, ambiences's good, the waiting time is the main concern. Too long.
Wait too long, it as NOT worth.... We are the 3rd guest at night but we wait for more than 90 minutes. The Japanese reserved guests got in first, then tourist guest did , that is why we have to wait more 90 minutes. food is not bad, if you have MUCH time and you are patient, you have to try it.
MoreGood place for dinner.
This place pretty much made up for my rainy trip to nara. For about 3200 yen you are getting a bargain for this meal , see pic below. The unagi and beef was amazing! Made my trip to Nara worthwhile
MoreIt was my first time trying unagi in Japan and it was great! The place is peaceful and the eels are cooked perfectly. Have to be very careful with bones though. I love the traditional rooms with tatami. You would need to take off your shoes here. Staff are friendly too.
MoreThe line was long (~45 min on a busy sakura season Wednesday), but the staff were so kind despite the massive number of customers. Stuns me how they can maintain their patience. The food was piping hot and sensuously good and service was extremely accommodating—glad I waited!
MoreOrdered the set with grilled eel with rice & beef sukiyaki. The sukiyaki was really nice! The grilled eel was alright. Ambience of the restaurant is good and the staff are very friendly. Will definitely come back again!
MoreHad to wait awhile but the eel was worth it. Definitely go early before the rush hours or a long wait. Good location in the heart of Nara, and authentic and tasty food. A must for tourists and eel fanatics!
MoreI have to say I’m a charcoal chef and I believe I can say what I experienced today, I ordered eel skewers with Rock salt, I wanted to try the eel on the simplest way possible, crazy expensive, awful service, the skewers were overcooked, the skin was bitter because it was burned. 1700 for the smallest skewer ever! And there was no Rock salt on it! I would not recommend this place.
MoreA must try for eel lovers. Strong charcoal flavors. Add your own sauce! Eat until ultimate satisfaction.
MoreQuite delicious. I have never had Eel before so the whole process of eating was quite interesting, there were instructions on the menu on how to eat it different ways, which was pretty nice of them to have. Overall. Nice staff, nice atmosphere and delicious food.
MoreThis is my 2nd time patronizing this place. I really like the ambiance of the place as it follows the Japanese tradition where :1) keeps yr shoe in a locker and exchange with a normal slipper2) take out the slipper before entering the dinning place3) wear a "toilet slipper" if you go toilet. The food is quite nice but slightly pricey. Highly recommended if you visit Nara
MoreTraditional restaurant just off the main strip. Very attentive service with many options for lunch (and not just eel). Lunch plans came with a variety of sides. Food was ok.
Morethe eel was amazing. best ive ever had in my life. solid service by the waiters/waitresses that served me. my only regret is not getting the eel+sukiyaki set. one thing that is weird is there are empty tables but they leave people waiting outside. im assuming its to preserve a nicer ambience.
MoreSpectacular Unagi place! While we had to wait for about 15min even though it was not dinner time, the service was such that each customer did not had to wait too long once they were seated at their table. We had the deluxe unagi set and 3-piece unagi set. The unagi was grilled to perfection, with a hint of charcoal. The accompanying sashimi was fresh and tempura was tasty.
MoreNaramachi set (in picture) was very delicious, really liked the atmosphere here
I love eel but this surpassed all the others! If you get the chance, go, eat and enjoy!
MoreAmazing Unagi (grilled eel) , great sashimi, great tempura! Service was amazing too. The seating is traditional as well as the music and general ambience. You will have to take of your shoes here. Before entering the dining room, also have places near the seats to hang your coats and all.Staff are very polite, and nice. Very helpful as well.I recommend after a long day of feeding deer to come try this place out.
MoreVisited this restaurant for lunch before heading to Nara park. The interior was very traditional, quiet and spacious. A good expreience for tourists. The food was absolutely delicious. I ordered the beef shabu shabu set and it was amazing. Highly recommended.
MoreOverhyped, the eel was ok, but not worth the wait
Like most of the high end Japanese food, the eels (unagi) is quite of original flavoured. Not like a freaking whole food eel over rice you get in America. The delicate flavor can be dull to some people. I really love their kakuni, however I wished they use yuzu sauce instead of a horseradish.
MoreVery friendly service and high quality eel to boot (had the super deluxe set myself and my mother, the tempura set). Worth a stop if you're in Nara. We were offered dessert for free and our server kept pouring us tea.
MoreEnjoyed their unagi set. Everything was fresh and delicious. Price was slightly on the high side but given the food served, it was definitely worth every penny. I would love to visit again for the food and ambience. Waiting time was around 20-30min during the weekday afternoon when i visited the place. English menus are available for tourists.
MoreVery tasty unagi and beef. Worth the queue. I prefer the set because it offers a good variety. Eel, salmon sashimi, assorted tempura and beef sukiyaki. Love it! Price is reasonable too.
MoreThis is a great spot tucked away for a very peaceful and "zenful" dinner. We got the Suki-yako box, and it did not disappoint! The staff were wonderfully helpful and food came out quickly!
MoreExceptional unagi restaurant, easily a contender for the best I’ve had in Japan (and I’ve eaten a good amount of unagi!) Perfectly grilled with just the right amount of char, and the eel liver soup that comes with the eel rice plate was absolutely the best I’ve had, the liver was super fresh and not chewy at all (can happen.) I’d stick with the eel (their specialty,) rather then a more elaborate set meal, as I had an eggplant w/ miso appetizer that was just ok, nothing special. Staff is friendly and English menus available. Sure, it’s on the pricey side, so if you’re not an unagi enthusiast the subtlety of how freakin awesome their eel is might be lost on you, so I’d save your money in that case and go somewhere else. Oh, and lines can get long here so be prepared, but absolutely worth it if you do love eel!
MoreIt was an amazing experience. Eventhough is expensive, it worth it.Te food was delicious and to be able to have a Japanese experience on the table was lovely.
MoreGreat ambience matched by their service. The staff were so attentive and polite. The food was good, the eel especially was nice. Did not have to queue, maybe we reached there when it just opened. Overall an excellent experience.
